I knew that C.S. Lewis and I had more in common than our Christianity when he said, "You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me." Welcome to a celebration of faith, tea, and the written word. I'm always engaged in a book, and whether it's one I'm reading or one of the inspirational historical romances I write, there's always a cup of tea close by. Join me in a cup as we chat about faith, our favorite books and the exciting places our reading and writing adventures take us.

Love's Reward Giveaway!

It's Release Week!

Happy, happy day! To celebrate the release of my very first novella, Love's Reward, in The Most Eligible Bachelor Collection, I'm offering a giveaway!

Why the Ghirardelli? (Why NOT the Ghirardelli?!) Well, my story takes place in 1896, San Francisco, and the main characters Daniel and Josie would have enjoyed the locally-produced chocolate.

Lots of bicycle giveaways too, because America was in the midst of a cycling craze during the 1890s. Both Josie and Daniel enjoy cycling. (Plus, I thought the Cavallini notebook and sticky notes were adorable.)

It's easy to enter the contest. Just pop over to my website for the automated entry form! The contest is open until May 10. Winner chosen at random by Rafflecopter and announced May 11.

The giveaway items are exactly as pictured, no substitutions. Void where prohibited.

Oh, and keep coming back for MORE opportunities to win copies of the book and other goodies. There will be giveaways on other blogs PLUS a mega-prize pack put together by all of the authors of The Most Eligible Bachelor Collection, coming this way May 5!

Ways to Help Your Favorite Author

I'm gearing up for the big release of The Most Eligible Bachelor Collection May 1--such an exciting time for me!

Some folks have asked me how they can help with promotion, and I've come up with a few ideas that anyone can do to support their favorite authors.

If you're inclined, give it a try...and let me know if you have any ideas, yourself!

Don't forget to read down to the bottom for a sneak peek at my grand prize giveaway package!

  1. Know that you are appreciated for the moral support you give the author! Authors are grateful for every reader and friend who's cheered them on.
  2. Follow your favorite authors on Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, etc. This way, you learn about giveaways, upcoming releases, and other goodies. Also, some publishers keep tabs on their authors' stats on these pages. Clicking that "like" button can help them more than you know!
  3. Now that you're following them, spread the word! Retweet their posts on Twitter. Share their status updates on Facebook to share their news with your friends. This is excellent, free publicity for your favorite authors and they will LOVE you for it.
  4. Did you know you can follow authors on Amazon and Goodreads, too? Just go to their Author Page and click on the"Follow" button. Then you'll be apprised of new releases, etc.
  5. If you are able to support your favorite author by purchasing a book, consider doing so. Timing your purchase to the book's release can look good to publishers, too.
  6. If your favorite bookstore does not have it in stock, ask if they can order it: it's possible that they've sold out or that they don't carry it. Either way, stores' computer software programs often contain reorder algorithms that can influence how the store makes ordering decisions. Special orders can help boost your favorite author's future sales potential.
  7. Ask your local library to stock the book, too.
  8. Take a photo of the book when you find it in a store or library, and then post the picture on social media. Tag the author.
  9. If you liked the book, write an objective review on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Christianbook, or Goodreads. Even a short review (1-2 sentences) is helpful in this online age, and authors are grateful for everyone who takes the time to submit a review. Reviews are most helpful when they focus on the book, not the cover art, delivery, packaging, or other things about which the author often has no control. Author Dina Sleiman shares how to write a fast, helpful review here.
  10. Attend the author's book signings, if they are local to you. Book signings can be fun, with freebies as well as face time with the author. And they'll appreciate you taking the time out to support them!
  11. Ever written to an author to tell them how much their book meant to you? Most author's websites have a Contact page, but writing a snail-mail letter to them c/o their publisher is a tangible, precious memento--that the publisher will know about, too.
What about you? Do you have any ideas to help your favorite authors?

A delightful collection!
Thanks to all who entered, and thanks to Jen for offering a copy. She'll be in touch with you soon!

But Wait, There's More!

Today from 11-7 pm EDT, several Christian romance authors (including me!) are celebrating our new releases with a party on Facebook. We're giving away prizes, sharing snippets of our stories and recipes, and making friends. The romances represented are both contemporary and historical, e- and paperback published. I am one of three Bachelor authors hosting (high five, Cindy Hickey and Shannon McNear!).

I will serve as hostess from 12-12:30 EDT, 9-9:30 PDT. I'm giving away a 4.7 oz package of my favorite Ghirardelli chocolates (Sea Salt Soiree) and a handcrafted bookmark with a bicycle charm, made by me and my daughter. As you may know, my novella, Love's Reward, is set in Ghirardelli's San Francisco during the height of the bicycle craze.
Dark chocolate with sea salt and roasted almonds, and the bookmark is trimmed in shades of blue.

As I write this post, I do not have author copies so I am unable to offer one for a giveaway. But there will be numerous, numerous opportunities to win copies! Monday, April 20, I offer some of the ways/places you can enter to win a copy, right here on this blog! So stay tuned!

Ten Things with Author Jennifer Uhlarik...and a Giveaway!

Today, we welcome Jennifer! Her debut release Sioux Summer is included in Barbour's The Oregon Trail Romance Collection...available now!
Jennifer Uhlarik
Jennifer Uhlarik discovered the western genre as a pre-teen, when she swiped the only “horse” book she found on her older brother’s bookshelf. A new love was born. Across the next ten years, she devoured Louis L’Amour westerns and fell in love with the genre. In college at the University of Tampa, she began penning her own story of the Old West. Armed with a B.A. in writing, she has won five writing competitions and finaled in two other competitions. In addition to writing, she has held jobs as a private business owner, a schoolteacher, a marketing director, and her favorite—a full-time homemaker. Jennifer is active in American Christian Fiction Writers and lifetime member of the Florida Writers Association. She lives near Tampa, Florida, with her husband, teenaged son, and four fur children.

Susie, thank you so much for having me today! I’m so excited to get to share a little about myself. When you mentioned doing “ten things about me,” it sounded so easy, but when you really get down to it, it’s not near as easy as it sounds. I hope your readers will find my ten things interesting or entertaining.

1.      I’m a wife going on 8 years of marriage. I’m also a mom/step-mom, and grandma. My step-son is 28, my son is 17, and my grandson is 5.

2.      I love animals and currently have two dogs and two cats—all rescues. I’d have LOTS more if my husband would agree, but he shows great wisdom, a level head, and immense restraint in not giving in to my animal whims. ;)

3.      I’ve lived all my life in the suburbs of several Midwestern or East coast states, yet my favorite genre to write is westerns and western romance.

4.      The whole reason I started writing was because a school friend told me that she was writing a novel. As a very competitive child, I saw her pronouncement as a challenge. I told myself, “If she can write, I can write better.” I was 12 years old and in the 7th grade…and I haven’t stopped writing since.

5.      When I’m not focused on my writing, I enjoy various crafts. My latest favorite is paper quilling (twirling thin strips of colored paper into coils and other shapes). You can check out all kinds of fun samples on my Pinterest boards (https://www.pinterest.com/jenuhlarik/). No, the samples on Pinterest aren’t *my* work—just work I admire.

6.      I’m the youngest of three children and the only girl.

7.      In my adult life, I have worked temp work, was a marketing director in a financial planning office, a business owner of a screenprinting and embroidery shop, an office manager, and a school teacher. I’m now a stay-at-home mom.

8.      I prefer action movies to chick flicks most of the time.

9.      I’m a firm believer in taking naps.

10.  I’m not much of a sports fan, but my husband got me into watching Major League Baseball in 2008, and I love it. (Go Rays!)

Thanks so much for sharing with us, Jen! We have a lot in common, including an appreciation for a well-timed nap.

Jennifer has graciously offered a copy of her debut release, The Oregon Trail Romance Collection, to one lucky, randomly-chosen winner! To enter, leave a comment by 11:50 PM EST on Thursday, April 16. I'll announce the winner here!

Available on Amazon!

Be sure to leave a comment to enter the giveaway, and say hi to Jen!

Spring Break!

Happy Easter! Yes, I know the day itself has passed, but Easter is a season, celebrated until Pentecost. Rejoice in the fact that Christ is risen! Alleluia!

My kids were off school last week, which means we were pretty busy. As a result, I'm going to be working this week. Because...

on May 1, in just over three weeks:

  • The Most Eligible Bachelor Collection releases
  • The manuscript For a Song, for The Cowboy's Bride Collection, is due.
And boy, am I excited.

I'm writing. I'm preparing a Prize Package to celebrate my Bachelor novella, Love's Reward. I'm being interviewed and featured on some blogs in May (info to come, and they include giveaways so you'll want to check them out!).

Meanwhile, Spring has sprung at my house. I've planted tomatoes, zucchini, and a bunch of herbs. Mourning doves are nesting in my "fruit salad" tree (elba peach, grafted with Santa Rosa plums and apricots--yum), and butterflies have found good nectar in the blossoming trees in my yard.

Good things are growing. God's given me some good work. What a happy place to be. I pray you feel the same about spring blooming around you and the tasks on your plate.

Next Monday, there will be a visit with author Jennifer Uhlarik when she shares her Ten Things and a giveaway! Hope to see you then!
